Early UFC 205 Look Ahead: What Will be the Fight of the Night?
Get ready UFC betting fans, UFC 205 has been all chalked up for November 12 at the Madison Square Garden. It will serve as MMA's triumphant return to a long time boxing hotbed, New York, a state in which the sport has been locked out since 1995 due to legislation which banned it.
The show will run thirteen bouts deep. Six fights will air on the Pay-Per-View broadcast instead of the usual five. Barring a major cancellation, the show is largely a finished product with three title bouts, the return of Chris Weidman, and a glimmering preliminary slate.
The main event is a superfight between lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and featherweight champ Conor McGregor, at lightweight. This is only the second time two champions have met for a single belt in octagon history, the first time since 2009 when Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn met.
The bigger, more rugged fighter won that time against the smaller, flashier foe. Of course, the circumstances are much different this time with Alvarez not quite seen as the cardio machine that was GSP. He won the title by virtue of a shock first-round knockout win over Rafael Dos Anjos.
Some proving grounds these will be for him against McGregor, the promotion's enigmatic superstar who is coming off of a great fight and win over Nate Diaz in their August rematch. He's explosive and takes pride in doing what one least expects.
The rest of the main card is as follows:
Tyron Woodley Vs. Stephen Thompson (Newly-crowned champion Woodley has felt overlooked and disrespected since his vicious knockout over fan-favorite Robbie Lawler. He goes from facing Lawler, a shopworn battler, to an athletic, polished, and fresh #1 contender in Thompson, a five time kickboxing champion. The winner is lined up to get some deserved recognition.)
Joanna Jedrzejczyk Vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz (Two of the sport's better technicians are Polish women. Who could've called it? Jedrzejczyk is running out of ideas as for who to face as strawweight champion. Kowalkiewicz, a former amateur rival, is hungry and fast on the rise in the UFC. Superfluous on a show stacked this high but still a great fight.)
Chris Weidman Vs. Yoel Romero (Weidman returns after almost a year out of the cage after losing his title to Luke Rockhold against Romero, a jacked Cuban with an unforgiving ground game. He's used it to win seven straight in the UFC. The winner gets a title shot for sure.)
Kelvin Gastelum Vs. Donald Cerrone (Cerrone has looked brilliant since moving to welterweight and continues his push against Gastelum, a tough Mexican contender in the title hunt.)
Miesha Tate Vs. Raquel Pennington (Tate looks to get back on track after losing her title in ugly fashion against Amanda Nunes. She draws Pennington, a well-rounded contender on a three fight winning streak.)
My pick for fight of the night is the main event, with hope being held for Gastelum Vs. Cerrone as each fighter comes forward and wages war at center cage. We still have a month to let this show ruminate, but fight UFC betting fans can hardly wait for perhaps the best event the promotion has put together. Check the sportsbook for current odds.
