Djokovic Well on His Way
Tennis tournaments are literally the process of elimination. Tennis betting is too, but in in a more prescient sense. And as the men's field narrows in the U.S. Open, the process involves trying to figure out who can beat Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic entered the tournament with a few nicks and bruises, but by luck of the draw, he got just what the doctor ordered. With the help of a walkover and a retirement in the second and third rounds, he played all of six games in five days. He had his first real work in about a week on Sunday when he needed three whole sets to do away with England's Kyle Edmund. For Djoker, the air of injury is still around; during the third set, he had a visit from a trainer who worked on his right arm. But he otherwise seemed in form.
Eyes on The Finals
As the bracket now sets up, Djokovic has a clear path to the finals. That's because the toughest competition on his side of the bracket, Rafael Nadal, lost a five-set duel with Lucas Pouille on Sunday. And no one, not even his next opponent, ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, could be considered even close to Djokovic in ability before the defending champ makes the finals.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Andy Murray would be the only player that could give Djokovic a run for his money. But Murray has a tougher path, with Dominic Thiem, Juan Martin del Potro and Stan Wawrinka all with upset potential.
U.S. Open Tennis Betting
I'm setting the injury problems aside, but apparently the odds makers are not. Djokovic opened the tournament at +105 in the U.S. Open betting futures and is now at +110. If you like him to win it, and I do, you just won't get a better price. And betting against Djokovic until the finals is not advisable. You'd be better off exploring the live betting options and finding a decent number in play. If you're looking for an outside shot, the winner of the Thiem v. del Potro matchup would bring would bring a nice price if futures are still open.
