2 to Watch in Tour's Last Leg

Posted by Webster Washington on 9/29/2016 8:48:32 AM

The doubts about the continuing dominance of the top players has brought a more wide-open scope and balance in tennis betting. So it is natural to try and sniff out some surging players who could provide profit as we approach the last portion of the tour season. Here are a couple of young players - one from the men's side and one from the women's - who could score upsets in the later rounds of upcoming tournaments.

Caroline Wozniacki

Here's a name we already know; she held the No. 1 ranking in women's tennis for 67 weeks as recently as five years ago. But her subsequent decline in form, plus bothersome ankle and wrist injuries, put her on the back burner for most tennis observers. Well, she's back and still only age 26. She entered the U.S. Open ranked 74th in the world and has been steadily improving ever since.

In New York, she took down Svetlana Kuznetsova and Madison Keys before losing to eventual winner Angelique Kerber in the semifinals. Then she captured the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo with wins over Carla Suarez-Navarro and Agnieszka Radwanska along the way. Radwanska defeated Wozniacki in the Wuhan Open, but Wozniacki's record against top players recently is hard to ignore. She's closing in on the top 20 once again and will be a player to watch.

Lucas Pouille

This 22-year-old Frenchman has also played well against top-notched competition. He most recently conquered David Goffin and Dominic Thiem in claiming the Open de Moselle crown on home turf in France. Before that, Pouille upset Rafael Nadal on the way to the U.S. Open quarters. Now ranked 16th in the world, Pouille is considered on par with Nick Kyrgios among the young guns. Only, unlike Kyrgios, he has more of a sense of self-control. He's smart and cool under pressure.

Tennis Betting

Though Wosniacki fell from grace, she didn't fall far enough to become an unknown entity. That's why it may be tougher to find a top price on her in women's tennis betting. Nevertheless, she'll be one to watch for upsets in later rounds. Pouille, on the other hand, may be sneaky good. Put a star by his name in men's tennis betting.
