A Speedy Setup in Women’s 100

Posted by Webster Washington on 8/9/2016 3:48:40 AM

They'll have to push to get into Florence Griffith Joyner air. But the Olympics field on the women's 100 meters track includes runners with some of the top 10 times in history, enough to make the race tight and the Rio 2016 betting interesting. "Flo Jo" of course was the buzz saw who won everything in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and put up a 10.49 seconds time to boot. That world record still stands, but we'll focus on four women who have been crowding the fastest lately, any of whom can win gold in the event in this Olympics.

Fastest of The Fast

DAFNE SCHIPPERS didn't get the moniker "The Flying Dutchwoman" for nothing. She can flat pick 'em up and lay 'em down, as her record over the past two years has shown. She won gold in the 2014 and 2016 European Championships, and captured silver in the Beijing worlds in 2015 with a time of 10.81. She comes into Rio 2016 ranked No. 1 in the world in the 100m and the favorite here.

SHELLY-ANN FRASER-PRYCE of Jamaica was the woman who beat Schippers in Beijing last year and is the veteran who is a proven winner. She's just 5 feet tall, but those legs turn into wheels on the track. The 29-year-old won gold in both the Beijing and London Olympics, and it will take a lot to keep her from a third. Her personal best is 10.70, but she hasn't approached that in recent years.

ELAINE THOMPSON is the 24-year-old upstart from Jamaica who has posted the fastest time this year, matching Fraser-Pryce's 10.70 of 2012. Though she's never medaled in a world event, it would be no surprise if she broke that trend here.

ENGLISH GARDNER has never medaled in the 100 either, but that's because she's been a U.S. relay specialist, helping her 4x100 team to silvers in the 2013 and 2015 World Championships. But this year, she posted a 10.74 in the 100m Olympic trials, and that makes her worth a look.

Rio 2016 Betting

Schippers is a nice +175 in the Rio 2016 betting futures, and she may take more money on looks alone. Thompson is an even nicer +250, and her Jamaican training makes her the value pick in my Rio 2016 betting. But Fraser-Pryce (+350) has the reputation, and Gardner (+550) the upset potential. The preliminaries start Friday morning. Don't blink or you'll miss 'em. Bet now.
