Zubrus Signs with the Sharks in a One-Year, Two-Way Contract

Dainius Zubrus, the 37 year old forward just signed a one-year, two-way contract with the San Jose Sharks. The announcement was made by the team’s General Manager, Doug Wilson. Wasting no time, his debut game was on Wednesday night against Chicago.

A native of Lithuania, the six-foot-five, 225 pound powerhouse is a force to be reckoned with on the ice. Known as a strong player with a heavy game, Zubrus is one of the most reliable players in the league. Before signing the contract, he was on the professional tryouts with the Sharks. The Sharks were recently on a six game winning streak, all of which were on the road. Unfortunately, for the eighteen-year veteran player, the Blackhawks were on point Wednesday night, with a final score of 5-2. The streak may be over, but Zubrus is just getting started.

Zubrus made a splash in the NHL after being drafted during the first round (15th overall) by Philadelphia during the 1996 NHL draft. He scored a record ten points (four goals and six assists), during this last season while playing for New Jersey, and he notably racked up a total of forty-two penalty minutes during the course of seventy-four games. Zubrus has lots to offer the Sharks with his many notable accomplishments such as the 359 assists and 225 goals scored during his 1,243 career games. Additionally, during playoff games, he added thirty-five points with eleven goals and 24 assists and sat in the penalty box for a total of 771 minutes.

Zubrus has spent time with a number of teams during his career. Teams like the Washington Caps, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres. Zubrus previously played for the Shark’s current coach, Peter DeBoer, from 2011 to 2014, when he was with the New Jersey Devils. A fact not lost on many, with the consensus being the DeBoer had a heavy hand in the signing of Zubrus. For whatever reason brought him to the Sharks, it is sure to be an interesting season.
