More World Cup of Hockey Notes

Posted by Webster Washington on 9/14/2016 3:25:01 AM

We're in the middle of the pre-tournament schedule for the World Cup of Hockey, which begins in earnest on Sept. 17. Here are some more news and notes that will help guide you in World Cup of Hockey betting:

Team North America Stock Rises

Team North America is looking more and more like a solid longshot in tournament. Not only are they displaying the team speed and talent, which we expected. But their depth looks strong, too. From the Connor McDavid-Jack Eichel line to the Jonathan Drouin-Nathan MacKinnon group, a lot of players are producing in the pre-tournament games. They're getting love in the World Cup of Hockey betting futures, too, going from +1200 to +850. Beware. They've been matched with Team Europe in the warmups. The brutes from Russia, Canada and USA could be on a different level.

-----

Team Sweden has more injury woes. The Swedes have been missing forward Rickard Rakell, who remains in a hospital with an unspecified illness. Forward Marcus Kruger, who missed Saturday's game with an upper-body injury, traveled with the team and practiced on Sunday.

-----

Sweden went about settling the score with their Scandinavian rivals from Team Finland on Saturday night, with a 6-3 win. Forwards Loui Eriksson and Patric Hornqvist each had two goals in that one.

On the Canada-USA Front

These aren't supposed to be crash-bang, hard hitting games, but there were already nasty goings on when Team Canada and Team USA split their exhibitions. Ryan Kesler hit Canada's Shea Weber in the Friday night game, which USA won. Both John Tavares and Joe Thornton had turns at Kesler the next night, with Thornton drawing a penalty.

-----

Carey Price appears to be the No. 1 goalie for Canada, and Braden Holtby is not complaining. Price was between the pipes when Canada won the Olympics in 2014, but last year was injured most of the NHL season. Holtby, a star for the Washington Capitals last season, has no experience in international competition. "Anyone who's looking at it from a sane perspective, I mean, he's won everything internationally," Holtby said. Price described his opening game loss to Team USA as "a bit of an adventure."
