Stanley Cup Betting – Kings, Devils Meet For NHL Glory

Posted by Don Melrose on 6/5/2014 3:57:04 AM

If you’re a sports betting player that loves the NHL, you’ve probably been following the Stanley Cup playoffs closely and you probably didn’t have New Jersey and Los Angeles as your Cup finalists, but the two prepare to square off for the biggest prize in hockey and it is set to be an intriguing series.

The Devils came out of the East as a sixth seed, getting past Florida in seven games (including two overtime wins to close out the series), then they rolled over Philadelphia in five and finally, a six-game victory over rival New York, who was the top seed in the conference. Ilya Kovalchuk leads all playoff scorers with 18 points, but he has added a little sandpaper to his game and that has boosted the Devils’ NHL betting odds as he has shown that he’ll do anything to win. But the offense isn’t a one-man show as seven players have nine points or more, and goalie Martin Brodeur has been big when he has needed to be. Brodeur is four wins away from a fourth Stanley Cup, which will cement a legacy that is already pretty much etched in stone.

The Kings have been the most impressive team in the postseason, getting rid of Vancouver (the Presidents’ Trophy winners with the most regular-season points) in five games, then a four-game sweep of St. Louis in which they won each game by two goals or more, and then a contentious five-game win over Phoenix. The stat that will catch your eye first about the Kings is that they’ve been unstoppable on the road, posting a 8-0 mark away from the Staples Center, which will help as they’re lower as an eighth seed, which means the Devils have home-ice advantage. Captain Dustin Brown has been a wrecking ball in the playoffs with 16 points, while Drew Doughty looks like the defenseman everyone thought he would be all season. Vezina-nominated Jonathan Quick wasn’t his best in the Phoenix series, but he should be able to regain some of that form for the Cup finals.

New Jersey comes into this series as a +150 NHL betting underdog, while the Kings are favored at -170 after rolling through the Western Conference, and these two met just once in the regular season, a 3-0 shutout for the Devils in Los Angeles way back on October 25, and neither Quick or Brodeur was in goal. The Devils have the edge here because they have a little more experience and even though the Kings defeated the top three seeds in their conference handily to get here, the Devils have played in the league’s toughest division (the Atlantic) all season long and they’re a little more battle-tested. Also, Brodeur is one of the great clutch goalies ever and he’ll take one more Cup before riding off into the sunset. Wager on the underdogs from New Jersey with your Stanley Cup online betting pick.
