Game Seven Showdown in Chicago

Posted by Carter Brown on 5/29/2013 7:54:59 PM

Detroit Red Wings @ Chicago Blackhawks – Wednesday (Series tied 3-3)

The online betting experts really never saw this coming from the Detroit Red Wings. After a very shaky regular season that saw the Red Wings barely make the playoffs, Detroit has managed to push the President’s Trophy winning Chicago Blackhawks to a seventh game. The biggest surprise has been the outstanding play of Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard. It can be said that Howard is probably the biggest reason why Detroit is still playing hockey this late in May. Howard has been brilliant and the Red Wings need him to be brilliant one more time to advance to the Western Conference finals.

The other surprise in this series is the lack of scoring from the Chicago Blackhawks. The betting sites remember that Chicago was the second highest scoring team in the league during the regular season, just 10 goals behind the league leading Pittsburgh Penguins. But Chicago has not been able to consistently figure out this Detroit defense and goaltender Howard. Chicago’s other issue is the inconsistency of their goaltender Corey Crawford. It probably isn’t fair to say that having a shutout on one night and then giving up two goals the next is being inconsistent, but that is how low the margin for error is in the playoffs.

Why the Red Wings Will Win

The sportsbook experts do not like the way things are stacking up against the Red Wings in this game. Chicago comes home to play a game seven after winning a critical game six in Detroit. But Detroit has had a way of dealing with the momentum created by Chicago all series long. This is a back and forth series between two teams that appear to be evenly matched. This game will be decided in the nets and that is where Detroit has been the strongest.

Why the Blackhawks Will Win

Chicago has developed a trend of being able to come back and win big games all season long. That trend continued into the playoffs and was upheld in game six of this series. But the mere fact that a team with so much offensive firepower was able to fall behind in a series against a team like Detroit who had struggled to score goals all season long, raised concern among fans and the coaches. Now that the Blackhawks get to play game seven in their own building, that may help them to nail down the win and move on to the conference finals.

The Bottom Line

The defending champion Los Angeles Kings await the winner of this game seven in the Western Conference finals. One would think that Chicago has the momentum coming into this game and should come away with the win. But there is just something about this Detroit team that makes it very hard for the betting world to look away and just hand the series to Chicago.

Pick: Detroit Red Wings
