Stanley Cup Finals Preview - Rangers v Kings Storylines

Posted by Chuck Barrett on 6/2/2014 10:25:19 AM

New York Rangers (+130) at Los Angeles Kings (-150) Stanley Cup Finals Odds to Win

The Kings will have the home ice advantage in the series which starts on Wednesday. They met twice during the regular season with each winning on the road.

A Staley Cup dream of the two largest markets has become a reality in the finals.
Besides the backing of the two biggest cities in the US, the teams have star power on the ice and interesting storylines.

The expectations for each team was very different when the playoffs started; the Kings were picked by many as top contender, while the Rangers came out of nowhere.
New York is looking for their first Cup in 20 years, while the Kings are going for their second in three years. The Broadway Blueshirts have been led by goalie Henrik Lundqvist who is looking to add his first championship to his collection. He already has an Olympic gold medal he won in 2006 in Turin.

The Kings required a seven game series in all three rounds of this playoffs while the Rangers played seven games in the first two rounds. Whoever wins will make history because there has never been a Stanley Cup winner who had to play in two seven game series in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

L.A. seems to be getting stronger and stronger in this year's post season and the Rangers will have to come out strong and make a statement. New York is are definitely hoping that the three 7 game series has taken a toll on the Kings and they will try to exploit that in the opening games.

Strategically, it will be interesting to see how the Rangers hang with such a tough Kings team. New York's defense will have to matchup against the Kings' great two way center, Anze Kopitar who is the top point scorer in the playoffs with 24 in 21 games. Will they put Rick Nash or Derick Brassard on Kopitar? The Rangers boast a steady defense but regardless they and Lundqvist will be pressed with the Kings' size and grit.

The Rangers are a +130 underdog pick to win the series. They have a shot but will need to have Lundqvist steal a couple games with his ability as a game changing goalie. He is one advantage the Rangers have over the Kings, the other is their speed. They have to be effective in these two aspects to pull off an upset.
