With one team in the playoff picture and the other out, Wednesday’s game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins comes down to an old-fashioned blood rivalry. And there are scores to settle; the last time these in-state foes met, one ejection and 93 penalty minutes were doled out.
Philadelphia Flyers Preview (30-29-17, 77 pts):
The Flyers are officially eliminated from the playoffs, but lately they’ve had a knack for playing well against better teams. Since Feb. 17, the Flyers are 6-1-1 against teams who are among the top eight teams in their conferences. Their lowly 0-9-3 record versus teams out of the top eight in that span is one of the reasons they’ll be home for the post season. They’re coming off of a 3-2 home shootout loss on Saturday against San Jose.
Pittsburgh Penguins Preview (42-33-11, 95 pts):
The Penguins earned their third win in five games on Sunday by defeating that same San Jose Sharks team in another 3-2 shootout. David Perron and Sidney Crosby had the shootout goals. But injury problems and salary-cap issues have left the Pens a bit shorthanded on defense. They’re expected to go with only five blue-liners against Philadelphia. They are jockeying for the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, currently tied with the New York Islanders.

There truly is bad blood here. The last game, on Jan. 20, featured four fights and 66 penalty minutes in just one period. Philly, by the way, won that one, 3-2 in overtime and are 2-0 against the Pens this season. So the home-ice revenge factor looks good. The Penguins should take this brawl and set up their final showdown of the year, which comes on Sunday in Philadelphia.
