Triple OT Ties Preds-Sharks Series

Posted by Webster Washington on 5/8/2016 3:37:59 AM

The San Jose Sharks were one call away from taking control of their series with the Nashville Predators. Now the Sharks will have some work to do to regain control. The Predators' 4-3 triple-overtime win Thursday night tied the series 2-2 and sends it back to San Jose for a crucial Game 5 on Saturday. Mike Fisher poked a rebound in the third overtime for the game winner. It was Fisher's second goal of the game and his line's fourth.

The Series so Far

The Sharks came into Nashville this week with a 2-0 lead in the series on wild 5-2 and 3-2 home victories. But Nashville scrambled back on a solid 4-1 victory Tuesday.

On Thursday the teams played to a 3-3 standoff in regulation, and the Sharks thought they had won the game when Joe Pavelski's sprawling tap went into the goal in the first OT period. But it was waved off when officials ruled that Pavelski had interfered with goalkeeper Pekka Rinne. The Sharks vehemently protested because they argued Pavelski had been shoved into Rinne. But officials upheld the call. So they played on … and on … and on. It was the longest game in Predators franchise history. Each team had power play opportunities and plenty of scoring chances in overtime, and by the third OT the play became slow and sloppy. The most energy the Predators showed was in celebration over Fisher's game-ending goal. Several players from both sides put in more than 40 minutes of playing time. Rinne had 47 saves and Sharks goalie Martin Jones had 44.

From Here...

Both teams will still be tired from the Game 4 marathon when they face off Saturday, though it will be a night game. That could make the under a good play. But the Sharks, who have had the edge on the ice for most of the series, should be a bit more driven from the sheer bitterness of the Nashville trip and the knowledge that they'll be in real trouble if they go back to Music City Monday facing elimination. The Sharks should be good at a decent price.
