Two Upstart Teams Face Off in New York

Winnipeg Jets @ New York Islanders – Tuesday April 2, 2013 7:00PM EST

If you would have told any of the online betting experts that a game this late in the season between the Winnipeg Jets and the New York Islanders would have playoff implications, you probably would have gotten a funny look. But as it turns out, the Jets are trying to run away with the Southeast Division standings and secure the third playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. With the recent collapse of the Carolina Hurricanes and the complete ineffectiveness of the other teams in the division, the door is wide open for the Jets to win its first division title ever.

After years of revolving goalies, the New York Islanders finally have a started in Evgeni Nabokov that everyone can agree on. The sportsbook experts have seen a definite change in the way the Islanders play the game which has resulted in more wins. As a result, the Islanders have climbed to within two points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It has been a while since the Islanders have made the playoffs and the team has been working hard all season to reach that goal. Now that it is within the Islanders’ reach, they do not want to let it go.

Why the Jets Will Win

The betting sites have seen a steady improvement in the Winnipeg Jets for the past several years. Most notably, Evander Kane is finally starting to assume his role as a premier goal scorer in the league. This is a young and hungry team that wants to prove that it belongs in the playoff hunt. It is hard to say what will happen next season when teams are back to playing 82 regular season games. But, for now, the Jets are going to capitalize on its own momentum and secure a spot in the playoffs.

Why the Islanders Will Win

It is not accurate to say that all the Islanders needed was a goalie and the team would be a playoff contender because there is a lot more that the Islanders need than just that. But the veteran presence of Nabokov has definitely helped the Islanders to develop a confidence that it has not had in a while. John Tavares has been emerging as a leader on the ice and the team is starting to climb closer towards its goal of a playoff spot.

The Bottom Line

This shortened season has seen a lot of things that have never happened before. With the pace the Jets are keeping, the team may actually run away with the Southeast Division if this were a full season. At this point, Winnipeg has learned to take full advantage of a struggling Southeast Division to secure itself a shot at the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Pick: Winnipeg Jets
