Two strong playoff caliber teams from the Eastern Conference square off on the ice on Wednesday night when the Detroit Red Wings play at the Pittsburgh Penguins. This is the second of three meetings between these hockey heavyweights this season. The Red Wings won 4-3 in overtime on their home ice at the beginning of the season in October.
What to watch from the Detroit Red Wings (31-12-9, 71 points)
The Red Wings are the hottest team in the league right now, winning nine of their last ten games. This includes a three game winning streak even without their goaltender Jimmy Howard who has been out for a little over a month. He is only expected to return on Saturday so Petr Mrazek will get the start against the Penguins. Recently Mrazek has been a wall in his reserve duty, stopping all but two of 74 shots, leading the team to three wins in a row.
What to watch from the Pittsburgh Penguins (30-15-8, 68 points)
The Penguins are headed back home after a three-game western Canada road trip. They won the first two games in Calgary and Edmonton but finished on a low note, getting shutout 5-0 by the Vancouver Canucks.
While the Penguins’ 68 points have them in second place in the Metropolitan Division, they have have not been able to win consistency. They are 8-9-4 in their last 21 games and only 4-8-2 in that stretch against teams that are currently in a playoff position.
