Daniel Briere retires

Posted by David King on 8/20/2015 5:19:22 PM

One of the most dominant forwards in recent NHL history, Daniel Briere has decided to walk away from professional hockey. Citing a desire to spend more time with this family as his primary reason, he will certainly be missed by his former teammates on the Philadelphia Flyers (who he spent the bulk of his career playing for), his teammates on the Colorado Avalanche, as well as hockey fans around the world.

"I've been very, very fortunate to have a chance to play with some great organizations, but at this point the family becomes a priority," Briere said in a statement. "The Flyers are where I played the bulk of my career. I've had a great time in Philadelphia and have been very, very fortunate to have the chance to play here."

The 24th overall pick of the 1996 NHL draft, Briere was picked up by the Phoenix Coyotes, but he didn’t start to make a name for himself until he went over to the Buffalo Sabres in 2002, where he earned his reputation as a clutch performer. In five years, he took the Sabres to two consecutive Eastern Conference championships.

Briere signed on with the Flyers when his contract with the Sabres was over, and he had an immediate impact on the team. He was a key member of the squad that made it to the Eastern Conference final in 2008 and the Stanley Cup finals in 2010.

At, 37, Briere now gets to walk away from the NHL as one of the most productive playoff performers of his generation, amassing a total of 116 points and 53 goals in 124 post-season games.

His regular season numbers aren’t too shabby either. 696 points after playing a total of 973 regular season games.

Numbers like that will earn you a lot of respect in the locker room, so it’s not surprising many of his teammates have taken to social media to show their appreciation for all his accomplishments.

“Congratulations to Danny Briere on amazing career,” Daniel Alfredsson tweeted. “Has been a great role model for myself and other smaller guys around the league. #clutch”

That pretty much sums up how many in the hockey community feel about Daniel Briere.
