Avalanche Look To Steal One At Home Versus Phoenix

Posted by Carter Brown on 4/25/2013 7:39:16 PM

The Colorado Avalanche won’t make the playoffs in 2013. For the first time in quite a while, neither will the Phoenix Coyotes. Colorado will host the Coyotes this Friday night in an online sports betting clash of teams that have already been mathematically eliminated, and that could provide an edge when it comes to picking a winner. The Avalanche were excellent at home this season and are comfortably settled in to the Western Conference basement with the highest odds of winning the draft lottery. That means they will bring their best as they look to give their fans something to cheer for, and it isn’t like Phoenix still has something to play for other than pride.

The Coyotes struggled on the road all year, and that is the biggest reason why they are on the outside looking in heading in to the final week of the regular season. The pieces are in place for Phoenix to regroup and come back stronger next season, but there is still a lot of work to be done before then.

NHL Betting Preview: Phoenix Coyotes

Posting a 14-8-1 home record is only meaningful if you perform at least with some fight on the road, and that is something that the Coyotes didn’t do as they won just six of 23 games as the visiting team this season. Goaltending was part of the problem with Mike Smith out for most of the year, but even when he did play Phoenix struggled to win games. Average defensive play wasn’t nearly good enough for a Coyotes’ team that already had to overcome its offensive shortcomings up front. Phoenix just doesn’t have the goal scorers up front to make up for it when they give up three goals or more, and it showed on the road in particular this online sports betting season.

NHL Betting Preview: Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche have a lot of pieces in place to build around moving forward including Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog, and the addition of PA Parenteau has provided an immediate boost up from as he leads the team in both goals and assists with 17 and 24 respectively. The firepower up front will be assisted by what appears to be a solid future in goal, as Semyon Varlamov and Sami Aittokallio are the most likely tandem for next season. Colorado needs to address its defensive core and add some toughness and grit to open up some space for the team’s young stars, and while it is still a work in progress, the future seems bright.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Coyotes will need to address the situation up front and make a decision on whether Smith is the goaltender of their future, but for now they will finish off the year with a rough game against a young Colorado team that still feels it has something to play for. The Avalanche struggled throughout this lockout shortened season, but there are some quality young pieces in place and this team is still four games above .500 on home ice this year.
