Chicago Blackhawks Hunt for Title Continues

Posted by David King on 1/24/2016 7:11:33 AM

Current Power Rankings have the Chicago Blackhawks towards the top with the defending champs having their sights set on a return to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Some reports are stating that out of the 30 NHL teams, 27 of them still consider themselves as possible playoff contenders. Few teams are more confident than the Blackhawks, themselves.

The Blackhawks were recently hot on a 12 game winning streak unlike any other they have seen in the last 12 years, the longest in the team’s history. A few other teams have had several wins which have made this season an interesting one for fans and bettors alike. Predictions are slightly harder to make with so many teams winning several games in a row only to be upset by an unlikely opponent. The end of this week had them with back to back losses against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. Tampa Bay beat them 2-1 and the Panthers shut them out with a final score of 4-0. Learning from the mistakes made in those games has the team focused on the future and the rest of their schedule.

One such mistake is the widely reported reason their defenseman, Rob Scuderi was cut from the lineup. Scuderi overslept and missed the start of the team’s morning practice. The Panthers can also give some credit for the shutout to the defense played by Roberto Luongo, who was hard to score on with 27 saves. Another factor to consider is that the Hawks schedule had them playing 6 road games in 13 days which had them visibly exhausted. Perhaps after a few days of rest could help the team relax, regroup and refocus themselves toward the joint effort of winning games.

Blackhawk’s coach Joel Quenneville discussed how his team is working towards their goal of retaining the Stanley Cup. The recent winning streak has kept the Blackhawks in the top 10 of the rankings and should they rebound from the recent losses, they should be able to move higher in the ranks, keeping them a heavy favorite to end up in the playoffs again this year. Current odds that the Chicago Blackhawks will win the Stanley Cup are at +500.
