Betting On Kings Devils - Kings Look To Continue Road Run In New Jersey

Posted by Don Melrose on 6/5/2014 4:34:52 AM

Thursday’s sports betting news in hockey will be headlined by Los Angeles’ overtime victory in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals in New Jersey, which was just another win in a long list of road victories for the Kings. The Devils will have another crack at being the first team to beat the Kings on the road when the two meet on Saturday night at 8:00 PM ET.

Anze Kopitar’s seventh goal of the playoffs was the difference in a 2-1 win for the Kings, who ended the game 8:13 into the first session of extra time. Colin Fraser opened up the scoring 9:56 into the first period and Jonathan Quick made 17 stops for the Kings, who outshot the Devils 25-18 and probably should have ended the game in the first two periods when they seemed to dominate play. Drew Doughty, who led all players in ice time with 28:15, Justin Williams and Justin Nolan all added assists for Los Angeles, who is now 9-0 on the road in the playoffs and their success on the road has been a massive storyline among NHL betting players; it’s to the point that the Kings were favored coming into this game.

Anton Volchenkov responded for the Devils with 1:12 left in the second period, although they needed a little help as New Jersey simply threw the puck on net and it seemed to bounce off a Los Angeles defenseman. But in truth, the Devils didn’t deserve to win this game and admitted as much afterwards as they came out flat and really didn’t seem to get going until that goal, but with the way that the Kings are playing, especially on the road, you can’t let them get a head of steam or you’re going to be in trouble.

The NHL betting lines aren’t out for Game 2, which is set for 8:00 PM ET (all games in the Stanley Cup finals are set for this time), but it would be a surprise if the Kings aren’t favored as they were in Game 1. Their nine wins on the road is an NHL playoff record and just another stat for a team that is 13-2 in the postseason to date and has beaten the top three seeds in the Western Conference as an eighth seed to get here, although they really aren’t an eighth seed. The Kings controlled the flow of the game from the drop of the puck and the Devils have to get off to a better start. Their best players have to lead the way, especially Ilya Kovalchuk, who looked nervous and the rest of the team followed suit. The Kings are the pick to make in your online betting book.
