Hurricanes Lose Hope Without Ward

Carolina Hurricanes @ Winnipeg Jets – Saturday March 30, 2013 3:00PM EST

A goalie can be the player that holds a team together. Goaltender Roberto Luongo is often credited by online betting experts for being the leader that held the Vancouver Canucks teams together that eventually made a run at the Stanley Cup. The Carolina Hurricanes have shown in the past that the team is lost without goaltender Cam Ward and Ward’s recent injury continues to highlight an ongoing issue with the team. Without Cam Ward, the Carolina Hurricanes cannot win.

The Winnipeg Jets are battling to be the best team in the NHL’s worst division as the Southeast Division looks to be weak again this season. The sportsbook world felt that the Florida Panthers were the weakest playoff team last season as the Panthers kind of fell into the Southeast Division title. But this year may be a bit different as the Winnipeg Jets look like they may be able to build some decent momentum heading into the playoffs. The Jets are not quite a threat to win the Stanley Cup, but they could be entertaining in the playoffs. This is a young team with a good future ahead of it. Nothing kick-starts a great future like a playoff berth.

Why the Hurricanes Will Win

The betting sites feared that the Carolina Hurricanes were just too fragile to remain Southeast Division leader all season long and this recent stretch has proved those fears to be justified. The team has fallen apart since the loss of Ward and it does not look like it is going to be getting on track anytime soon. Backup Justin Peters is certainly doing his part to try and get the team moving, but the team is not responding. In this game, Carolina needs to start playing like it did before the Ward injury if it wants to get back on track and start winning games again. Otherwise, these last 10 or so games of the season could be very long for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Why the Jets Will Win

The Winnipeg Jets had nothing to prove when the season started and the team still has nothing to prove. However, it is showing the world that it knows how to play good hockey and that it can compete for a playoff spot. Even if Winnipeg was not leading the Southeast Division, it would still be a playoff team in the Eastern Conference. This is a young team that is playing like it doesn’t have a care in the world, and that can be a very dangerous team to have to face in the postseason.

The Bottom Line

The Carolina Hurricanes had a strong grasp on the Southeast Division, but that grasp was fading even before Ward’s injury. Now that Cam Ward is gone for the remainder of the regular season, it looks like the Carolina Hurricanes will have to make way for the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are free-wheeling and looking to take the postseason by storm as the Winnipeg Jets head to the team’s first division title ever.

Pick: Winnipeg Jets
