Bet On Bruins Capitals - Capitals Face What Amounts To A Must-Win Against Bruins

The Washington Capitals have played hard and well to this point in their first-round playoff series against the Boston Bruins, but they have to win Game 4 if they want to win the series.

East Quarters, Game 4: Boston Bruins @ Washington Capitals – Thursday, April 19

Why Boston Will Win

When you make an online betting play in an NHL playoff series, the laws of averages don't always hold up, but they have to be taken into consideration. Through the first two and a half games of this series, the conventional wisdom was being stood on its head. Washington's third-string goaltender, Braden Holtby – in for the injured Tomas Vokoun and second-stringer Michal Neuvirth – was outplaying the defending Stanley Cup-winning goalie of the Boston Bruins, Tim Thomas. Washington broke ahead of Boston by a 2-1 margin in Game 3 of a tied series. The Capitals and Holtby had allowed just one regulation-time goal to the Bruins through seven periods plus the first nine minutes of the eighth period in this series.

Playing on home ice at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., Washington was controlling the run of play and was in position to register a big-league shocker. This was the series that – given the goaltending matchup – figured to be the most lopsided in the Eastern Conference's first round. Yet, Washington was applying enough pressure to gain leverage in Game 3 and put itself in position to take a 2-1 series lead. However, Boston was finally able to get to Holtby and shake the confidence of the youngster who was diving into the playoff cauldron for the first time. Boston scored midway through the second period and then added two more goals in the third, the game-winner coming with 1:53 left in regulation.
The Bruins earned a 4-3 win to go up 2-1 in the series. They rattled the Caps' overachieving netminder and put all of the burden on Washington for Game 4 on Thursday. The odds have seemingly swung in Boston's favor. Washington had a really good chance as long as Holtby was in a great frame of mind, but with the Bruins' four-goal outburst in Game 3, that moment has seemingly come and gone, never to return. The Bruins are in the driver's seat at this point.

Why Washington Will Win

When betting on this game, you can look at the goaltending matchup, but it's also worth noting that Boston was really helped on the power play in Game 3. The Capitals took bad penalties at inopportune times to feed the Bruins' confidence. If Washington can stay out of the box and play 5-on-5 hockey in this game, it has a very good chance of keeping the Bruins locked down and playing the defense-first style that worked so well in Games 1 and 2 in Boston. Washington can still establish its pace and tempo in this series. If it does, it will have every chance to win on Thursday.

Who Will Win?

Boston has cracked the code and solved Braden Holtby. Many people thought it would have happened in Game 2 of the series, but it has finally taken place. Boston should impose its will on Washington and win Game 4 by at least two goals.
