Some Interesting Games On Tap for the NHL Eastern Conference Playoffs

Posted by Carter Brown on 4/30/2013 7:47:45 PM

The way that the Montreal Canadiens were playing towards the end of the regular season had the online betting expert convinced that the Boston Bruins would win the Northeast Division. But the Canadiens managed to put together a two-game winning streak to finish the season and held onto its division title. That put the Canadiens into the second seed in the Eastern Conference and earned Montreal a first round date with the Ottawa Senators.

After several weeks of indecision, the New York Rangers finally decided to climb the Eastern Conference ladder and achieve the sixth spot in the standings. The betting sites were concerned that the Rangers would not make the playoffs at all, but the Rangers found a way to turn on the gas and move up. For its efforts, the Rangers will get a chance to play the Washington Capitals, who have been extremely difficult to pinpoint throughout the entire season.

Montreal Canadiens (2) vs Ottawa Senators (6)

There is a lot for Canadiens’ fans to be worried about when it comes to this series. Montreal has been able to play a physical style against teams and beat the opposition into the boards. But Ottawa does not shy away from the physical game and Ottawa even has a bit of physical intimidation that it puts into its own game. The other problem for Montreal is the inconsistent play of goaltender Carey Price. No one is sure what to expect from Price when the playoffs open.

The sportsbook experts could realistically say that the Ottawa Senators have a physical advantage over the Canadiens and Ottawa has more consistent goaltending with Craig Anderson. But the Senators just cannot skate with the Canadiens and that will be the thing that decides this series.

Pick: Montreal Canadiens in Six Games

New York Rangers (6) vs Washington Capitals (3)

The Capitals are the best team in the worst division in the NHL. But Washington came into these playoffs on fire. The Capitals, behind the scoring of Alex Ovechkin and the goaltending of Braden Holtby, earned their spot in the playoffs and could be a huge threat to take out the Rangers. Holtby established himself as a playoff goaltender last season and that will mean a lot to the Capitals in this postseason.

The New York Rangers continue to perform below fan expectations. When those expectations are set by the bloated payroll in New York, then it becomes easy to see why so many Rangers’ fans are angry with the team’s progress. The Rangers come into this series unable to score goals and riding on the back of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Unless New York can figure out a way to start putting the biscuit into the basket on a regular basis, then this will be another disappointing postseason for the boys in blue. Big changes could be on the horizon before next season for the New York Rangers.

Pick: Washington Capitals in Seven Games
