NFL Betting Trends AFC and NFC Titles

Posted by Javier Morales on 1/24/2016 8:28:49 AM

The NFL betting trends in the AFC and NFC championship round offer more means to make the best possible pick with the Super Bowl the next step.

The trends show how dominant at home Carolina and Denver have played against Arizona and New England, respectively. Can history repeat itself? Or will the Cardinals or Patriots buck the trend?

The following is a look at some of the NFL betting trends pertaining to the conference championship round this weekend:

New England (-3) at Denver

Over/under: 44.5 points

When New England has ventured into Denver’s Mile High Stadium, the Patriots uncharacteristically do not play well, failing to cover against the spread (ATS) in five of their last games there.

That happened on Nov. 29 when Denver defeated New England 30-24 at home in overtime although the Patriots entered the game as a 2.5-point favorite. In the previous two times the teams have met in the playoffs at Denver, the Broncos won by scores of 26-16 in the 2014 AFC title game and 27-13 in the 2006 divisional playoffs.

Balancing the equation, Denver has struggled against New England with a 2-5 record ATS in its last seven games between the two teams.

Another back-and-forth: Although the Broncos are 14-3 straight-up (SU) in their last 17 games at Denver, they are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games there. The one cover in that span was the game against New England seven weeks ago.

Arizona at Carolina (-3)

Over/under: 48 points

Two obvious trends to think about when Arizona travels to Carolina to face the Panthers on Sunday: The Cardinals’ bad record on the road there and the probability of the game being a high-scoring affair.

Carolina has not been a fun place for Arizona, which is 1-4 SU in its last five games there. Match that struggle with Carolina’s dominance at home with Cam Newton at quarterback and it could spell a long afternoon for the Bruce Aryan’s team. Carolina is 16-1 SU in its last 17 games overall.

When Arizona ventures on the road high-scoring affairs generally occur. The total has gone over in six of Arizona’s last nine games on the road. Another reason to bet the over: The total has gone over in five of Carolina's last six games at home.
