UFC Vets Makashvili, Soriano Top CES MMA 38

Posted by MMAartmartial.com on 9/18/2016 9:00:59 AM

Get ready MMA betting fans, the AXS TV fights series once again puts Rhode Island-based promotion CES MMA in the national spotlight. The main bout features "The Hornet" Levan Makashvili, who made a name for himself as a pesky battler in his three octagon bouts (1-1-1) against Providence's own Sean Soriano, who was recently 8-0 and a top prospect before a 1-4 slip.

Makashvili, 27, is a scrapper who wins fights with his wrestling and combination striking. His game is fairly straightforward, but still troubling. His biggest win came in gritty fashion against Mark Eddiva at UFC Fight Night Manila, when he scored seven takedowns to earn his lone UFC win.

Soriano, 26, was matched tough in the UFC. He suffered losses to Tatsuya Kawajiri, Charles Rosa, and Chas Skelly which led to him being cut from the promotion. Nonetheless, he is one of the best fighters in Rhode Island area, a member of the Blackzilians camp, and will have a strong backing fighting in Providence.

If Soriano's takedown defense is sharp, he will have the chance to utilize his greater hand speed to win rounds. His chance at scoring a finish is better than the Georgian's, whose best bet is to try to frustrate Soriano in the opening round and look to apply pressure in the second and third to put away the win. Most MMA betting fans would agree with that assessment.

The pick is Levan Makashvili by unanimous decision based on recent performances.

The co-main event sees top New England featherweight prospects Calvin Katter and Chris Foster meet.

Katter is currently riding a seven fight win streak. At his best, Katter is a technically sound fighter with good striking, clinch work, and takedowns.

Foster, meanwhile, has been around the block a couple times. He lost a first-round TKO to UFC-bound Rob Font in August 2013, but has since climbed back with a 2-1 run in which he came up short against Saul Almeida in the WSOF but scored his biggest win over previously unbeaten Vovka Clay at Bellator 153.

Foster is more experienced at a high level than Katter, who has shown remarkable upside as a well-rounded fighter. Count on Katter getting tested to say the least. Check the sportsbook for current odds.
