7 More Kentucky Derby Best Bets
With so many good horses in the field, Kentucky Derby betting online always offers a chance at a lucrative payday. In my last entry, I summarized the top favorites in the field, all who should be anywhere from around 3-1 to 10-1. Here's a list of horses who should go off at even more attractive odds, making them other good choices for Kentucky Derby best bets. Any of them could be wearing roses late Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Destin is a fast horse who put up a track-record time in the Tampa Bay Derby. That earned him a 100 Beyer speed figure. But that was way back in March, and the two-month layoff may leave him a little rusty. He's versatile enough to stalk or close from a few lengths back. With Todd Pletcher as his trainer and Javier Castellano up, Destin is a player.
Creator comes off an Arkansas Derby win, and Arkansas runners have done well in recent Kentucky Derbys. After a slow start to his career, this horse has shown vast improvement in his 3-year-old season. Plus trainer Steve Asmussen is having a good year.
Was a pretty relaxed morning at Churchill, with some light gallops from Lani, Gun Runner, and Creator. Gun Runner was my horse of the morning— Amy Nesse (@horsegirlamy16) May 1, 2016
Mo Tom has been in the Derby picture for a while, but has been unlucky in his last two starts in Louisiana. In both the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby, he had to check up in traffic in the stretch. If this horse has a clear path to make his move, the potential to win is there. Jockey Corey Lanarie is good on the Churchill dirt.
Brody's Cause was one of my Kentucky Derby best bets until he got blistered in the Tampa Bay Derby. But you could easily draw a line through that race and put him among the favorites this time. After all, he has won two Grade 1 races, bouncing back nicely to win the Blue Grass Stakes a month ago. A son of Giant's Causeway, and a winner at 1 1/8 miles, he should be able to handle the Kentucky Derby distance. But is he fast enough?
Outwork may be the only true speed horse in the field. A front-running style is usually good on dirt, but it is hard to say how long it will carry him. He showed gut in outlasting the field in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial last out. But he was struggling and losing ground in the final strides against a mediocre field. Pletcher, Repole Stables and jockey Javier Velazquez make for good connections.
Danzing Candy is another who should be among the frontrunners to start the Derby. But as the Santa Anita Derby illustrated, he can be caught and passed in the stretch. The last 16th of a mile got him. He's still a fast horse who has put up one of the top speed figures in prep races this year. He could be somewhere in the money with a good trip.
Majesto was there to pick up the pieces when Mohaymen fell off in the Florida Derby. But his second-place finish to Nyquist didn't earn him much notice. Another slow starter who took a while to get his maiden win, he's just the type of horse that will beat you. Gustavo Delgado is an underrated trainer.
Including the five favorites previously listed, that's 12 in the field, all who have the stuff to land the big prize in Louisville. I wouldn't argue against any of them for your best Kentucky Derby bets. Right now, I'm sticking by Exaggerator to upset the favorites, Nyquist and Mohaymen. Of the horses above, I like Destin to make a good showing, and he should go up at an attractive price. I'm figuring him in a three-way exacta box with Nyquist and Exaggerator. If you want to swing for the fences, Majesto should be in the 30-1 range. I'm thinking Gun Runner may go off with nice odds, too, so I'll consider him for an across-the-board ladder bet. That's $2 to win, $4 to place, $8 to show. Late workouts this week and the post-position draw on Wednesday may sway my opinion, so there are updates to come.
