Early Breeders’ Cup Betting Favorites

Posted by Webster Washington on 8/14/2016 8:35:59 AM

We've followed the 3-year-old colts through the Triple Crown and the Haskell this year. With another big 3-year-old race around the bend, the Travers Stakes on Aug. 27, it appears that Exaggerator and Nyquist have a rivalry going as the top two in that division. But those horses aren't the best of all, and for Breeders' Cup betting, it's time to pick up the runners who have better shots at winning the BC Classic. Two of them are females.

These Girls Go

SONGBIRD is a 3-year-old filly who could probably have run with the boys in the Triple Crown. But trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has chosen to keep her in female races. Can't argue with the results. She's unbeaten in nine career races, including five Grade 1s, last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies among them. It appears Hollendorfer wants to keep it that way; she's pointed toward the G1 Alabama in a few days, and the Cotillion on Sept. 24. She could qualify for just about any BC event, so you have to consider her a possible for the Classic.

BEHOLDER had her first setback in nine races when Stellar Wind outdueled her in a great Clement L. Hirsch Handicap (G1) at Del Mar.

That's OK. This 6-year-old mare has 17 wins in 23 starts, including 10 G1 wins. And she's a proven winner against the boys, having left the likes of Hoppertunity and Hard Aces in her dust. She scratched out of a BC Classic showdown with American Pharoah last year, and the debate still rages. She's likely to defend her G1 Pacific Classic crown on Aug. 20, before tackling the BC Classic.

2 Boys to Beat

CALIFORNIA CHROME won the first two legs of the Triple Crown back in 2014 and has been running well since. He lost his only two races in 2015, but has come back to win four straight this year, including the Dubai World Cup (G1) in March. The winner of 14 if 22 starts, he could be headed for a showdown with Beholder in the Pacific Classic before heading for the Breeders' Cup.

FROSTED lost to Chrome in Dubai, or he could be considered the best. Only American Pharoah was better than Frosted in their 3-year-old season, and Frosted has won three of four this year. He claimed the Whitney Handicap earlier this month and may just rest through to the Breeders' Cup.

Of the lot, I like Beholder, and at 15-1 in the early futures of Breeders' Cup Classic betting, I'd say she's a bargain. Meanwhile, keep an eye on racing for the next few weeks to hone your Breeders' Cup betting knowledge. The next two weekends could also bring returns at the Racebook. The Arlington Million and Beverly D. head up a great card at Arlington Park this Saturday. And with California Chrome and Beholder dueling in the Pacific Classic, Del Mar should be your Racebook destination on Aug. 20.
