The Girls of the Breeders' Cup

Posted by Webster Washington on 10/30/2016 4:13:39 AM

Female horses might well steal the show in this year's Breeders' Cup, because there are so many talented fillies and mares out there this year. At least five of them are possibles for lining up against the boys in various races. Aidan O'Brien trainee Found is cross entered in the Classic and Turf events, though she's likely to stick with the Turf. Seventh Heaven, Alice Springs, Miss Temple City and Celestine are also listed as possibles to test the male runners. But the Breeders' Cup Distaff is definitely the equine sorority throwdown that everyone will be looking forward to. It will feature two horses who have developed a sort of rivalry without facing each other, along with a couple of others who can run with them. Here's a look at the field for that momentous event.

BC Distaff

Two of the fastest and most established runners in the world are scheduled to hook up here. It's a matchup that has been anticipated for months now.

Songbird has won all 11 of her races going back to last year when she captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. She's put away every other lady she's faced on both coasts and in seven Grade 1 races. But she's never taken on the boys.

Beholder has tested the male horses twice, winning a G1 last year and placing second to California Chrome in the G1 Pacific Classic in August. Also taking two setbacks to Stellar Wind this year, the 6-year-old still has won 25 of her 30 races, making her the most durable thoroughbred we've seen in years.

Stellar Wind could be better than both of them. She's beaten Beholder twice and lost to her once. But while her seven wins in 11 starts is as reputable, this daughter of Curlin has never won at the 1 1/8-mile distance of this race.

Curalina, Stellar Wind's half sister, would round out a nice superfecta for this race, if in fact she runs in it. She has G! and G3 wins to her credit this year. Her trainer, Todd Pletcher, may run her in the Filly & Mare Sprint instead.

I'm a Chatterbox, winner of two of her last three G1s, is another who could make an impression on this showdown.

Breeders' Cup Betting

The official lineup and post positions still to be finalized, Songbird, Beholder and Stellar Wind presently appear to be the class of the field for this race, and not a bad trifecta to consider in Breeders' Cup betting.
