How Many Wins Does Jim Boeheim Have?

Syracuse Orange head basketball coach Jim Boeheim won his 1,000th game over the weekend, an amazing accomplishment that is a testament to his longevity in college basketball coaching. But his number of wins is disputed, with the NCAA only recognizing 899 of his wins, while others think he should be credited with all of the 1,000 victories he has helped his team achieve on the court, as he helps improve his current team's odds to win it all again.

Boeheim's Vacated Wins

Jim Boeheim has had over 100 wins vacated as a result of an NCAA investigation into academic improprieties committed by the Syracuse basketball program. So while he has indeed coached teams to where his opponents have lost against him 1,000 times, he is only credited with 899 victories. Given the scope of the violations committed by Syracuse over the course of Boeheim's time there, it's hard to argue that he should be reprimanded, but taking wins off of his win total is hardly an effective way to do that.

This is an NCAA-wide issue when it comes to punishing institutions for their indiscretions off the court. A school like Syracuse is still going to recognize all 1,000 of Boeheim's wins, whether the NCAA does or not. The vacated wins don't really affect the school or the coach in any way, while future punishments such as postseason bans and scholarship reductions would provide a tangible impact that could discourage future incidents like those that took place at Syracuse, Louisville, and other programs around the country that see rules broken and don't fix the problem because they haven't been taught that there are consequences for their actions.

Syracuse is currently a longshot to win the NCAA Tournament at +4000 odds. With their inconsistent play to this point in the season, those long odds are understandable, at least until they prove that they can routinely defeat the top teams in the ACC.
