Petrov, Perez Meet Eying Next Big Opportunity

Get ready boxing betting fans, Golden Boy Promotions' Boxeo Estelar series continues Friday, September 30 at a frequent venue, the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

The main event will see one of the sport's most beloved action fighters in top ten lightweight contender Petr Petrov doing battle with a skilled competitor in Michael "The Artist" Perez.

Petrov, 33, was born in Ryazan, Russia, but fights out of Madrid. He is now a fluent speaker of Spanish and a breakthrough in the United States as one of the best fighters under Art Pelullo's Banner Promotions. He has won six straight bouts since a hard-fought defeat to current WBC lightweight champion Dejan Zlaticanin. Included in his tear are three wins in 2014's Boxcino lightweight tournament, in which his adversaries were 44-6 in all.

Stylistically Petrov is a scrappy fighter who banks on good infighting and body work. He doesn't do much in terms of defense and doesn't quite have the power of Marcos Maidana or Zlaticanin -- the only two fighters to beat him since 2007 -- so he depends on his ability to pepper and exhaust his opponents as the rounds go by.

Perez, 26, is 10-0-1 since his lone defeat to former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa in 2012, when each was a hot prospect on the rise. His streak includes wins over veterans Miguel Acosta and Martin Honorio, fighters past their primes but tough enough to give him rounds, and fellow up-and-comers Jared Robinson and Fidel Maldonado Jr.

The Newark, NJ native made a name for himself with his quick hands, timing, and footwork, but proved too cute for Figueroa in his first appearance on the big stage. He's not impossible to find and shouldn't have a sizeable advantage in punching power over Petrov, but will have a better jab and better timing.

This is a really good match-up for a showcase series, a rare treat for boxing betting fans. This is more Perez's chance to shine as it is his second chance to prove he belongs on the world stage against a gatekeeper who better knows his place. He has fought a lot of rounds since 2012 and should know how to deal with pressure and dissect a feisty foe like Petrov by now. I think this one goes the distance if Perez wins but Petrov's chance of scoring a TKO late in the fight is definitely there.
