Boxing betting tips

Everyone wants to be a part of something big. That’s why sports betting has been so popular over the years, and why boxing is about the most fabled of the wagering sports.

With a big event like the upcoming Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, everyone wants to get in on the action, even those unfamiliar with the sport or unfamiliar with betting. For them, boxing betting tips come in handy.

When betting boxing, the mechanics are fairly simple, but being a winner takes some research, skill….and sometimes, luck.

Boxing betting odds explained

Understanding boxing odds is a breeze for those familiar with sports betting. For others, it’s just a matter of basic math. For most boxing matches, sportsbooks offer a “money line” on the outcome and on the number of rounds the fight will last. For instance, the favored boxer may go up at -300 (minus 300) money line. This means that a player who likes the favorite to win must put up $300 for a chance to win $100 – or $30 for a chance to win $10, and so on. The underdog might be listed at +260, so a bettor pays $100 for a chance to win $260. On the same fight, the book may list an over/under of 7.5 rounds - over, -400, and under, +300. So if the player bets $100 on the “under,” and fight is stopped in the seventh round or earlier, the player collects $300 in winnings. If he took the “over,” and the fight continues into the eighth round, the winnings would be around $25 on that $100 bet. Depending on the book or casino, the minimum bet may be as low as $5.

Big events like Mayweather-Pacquiao will have a number of “proposition” bets, such as what type of punch will land first or whether one boxer will be knocked down. Some books will also offer a scorecard spread, or what the difference will be on the final scorecard (take the favorite -13.5 and win if he wins by 14 or more points).

How to bet boxing

Picking a winner in the ring requires some basic knowledge of the opponents and evaluation of some basic statistics. With a little research a good bettor should be able to picture a fight in his mind, and then have fun watching to see how it comes out. Here are a few things to consider:

Tale of The Tape – This standard listing for every fight reveals things like height, weight, age, reach, record and experience. Sometimes you a can find a mismatch right off. For instance, a boxer with many more wins by knockout should tell you something. Or a southpaw (left-handed) boxer may have an advantage.

Previous opponents – What level of competition has the boxer faced? A mismatch can show up here, too.

Boxing styles – Does a boxer punch hard or jab quickly? Does he bounce on his feet or walk patiently around the ring? Does he brawl or judiciously pick and choose opportunities? And how does that style match up with his foe’s style? There are a lot of films and tapes of fights on the internet that will help you pick up stuff on plenty of boxers.

Physical condition – The fighter should be training well, keeping his weight and looking fit.

Form – Make sure a boxer has performed well in his most recent fights. If he has been struggling, there could be trouble.

Motivation – This applies to team sports, but especially to boxing. There are plenty of examples of one boxer who “wanted it” more than the other. Read up and get an angle on that.
