HBO goes split-site for two of boxing brightest stars
Gennady Golovkin and Roman Gonzalez are respectively two of the best boxers in the world today according to many boxing betting enthusiasts. When combined, they are the best show, hands down, in the sport today. That show returns as they do on September 10.
Premium cable network HBO has made a welcomed habit of featuring them back-to-back on their airwaves. On April 23, Golovkin defended his WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO Middleweight titles against Dominic Wade, scoring his twenty-fourth straight knockout in his sixteenth defense of a version of the middleweight title. That same night, three weight division champion "Chocolatito" Gonzalez turned away McWilliams Arroyo to defend his WBC Flyweight title and move to an incredible 45-0.
History continued to be made at the forum in Inglewood, California, where those bouts took place. Sadly, the Atlantic ocean will separate the pride of Nicaragua and the crusher from Kazakhstan on Saturday, September 10. But they still fight on the same night, and on the same television network which has paired them three times already; to audiences' delight.
Golovkin, 34, heads to Sheffield, England, to face IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in a curious match-up being billed as a super fight to the delight of boxing betting fans.
Brook, 30, embodied athleticism in a run which saw him outbox rugged American Shawn Porter to win his title and defend it three times; knocking out Canadians Kevin Bizier, Jo Jo Dan, and British countryman Frankie Gavin. Will he carry his frame up thirteen pounds? Does he have the power and poise to keep "Triple G" at bay? If so, Matchroom Sport's Eddie Hearn will be seen as a genius instead of a fool, which he just may be for pitting his star fighter in one of few bouts he wouldn't be favored to win.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, will be kept behind in the states. Back in Inglewood, Gonzalez moves up in weight to face WBC Super Flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras.
With Gonzalez finally introduced to US television audiences, Mexican Cuadras may be one of the fight game's best kept secrets. 35-0, Cuadras is, like Gonzalez, an intelligent fighter with an unforgiving, well-calculated attack. His hand speed and defense might not be able to keep up, though, which will see "Chocolatito" crowned a four-division champion; a first ballot hall-of-famer at age 29.
