Canelo Reacts to Critics Regarding Khan Fight

Posted by David King on 3/6/2016 7:43:24 AM

With Floyd Mayweather out of the picture, at least for now, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Amir Khan is about how good it gets for boxing fans right now. The two have agreed to face off on May 7, and the winner of that bout will have a solid case to get a fight against Mayweather, if the former pound-for-pound king decides to come back for one last fight.

It's a matchup that odds makers feel favors Canelo, and critics have accused him of cherry picking, considering the fact there are more dangerous, and more intriguing, matchups out there for the fast rising Mexican star. GGG and Andre Ward are two matchups that come to mind, matchups hardcore boxing fans would love to see.

Still, Canelo isn't about to let his critics get the best of him, and he fired back at them during a recent interview.

"When you're inside the ring, nobody has an advantage," Alvarez explained. "People are going to say what they want to say, but nobody has an advantage. I can do things right or do them wrong, I'm always going to be criticized, so that doesn't bother me. I have to be ready. I have to be ready for whatever he brings, that's what I'm focusing on."

However, Alvarez did admit the fact that he was just as surprised as many boxing fans and critics were when they found out about the matchup.

"I was surprised, but he's deserving. He's a fighter that's tall, he can fight pretty much at any weight. He's got great boxing ability, he's very fast. He took the fight for whatever reason, so I'm going to be prepared. I'm going to be ready. I don't like surprises, so I'm going to be ready for him."

Alvarez will enjoy a decent size advantage when the two face off, and many expect the size difference between the two to significantly affect the outcome of the bout. However, it is worth noting that Canelo has struggled against technical boxers, Floyd Mayweather and Erislandy Lara for example, and Khan is certainly a technically savvy boxer himself.

It wouldn’t be wise to count him out just yet.
